Buffalo Sports Columnist Larry Felser Passes Away

Longtime sports columnist for The Buffalo News, and staunch AFL supporter, Larry Felser passed away yesterday after a brief illness. He was 80 years old.  You can read his obituary in The Buffalo News HERE.

We’re One Year In…

I wanted to use today’s post for a bit of review and to celebrate an anniversary of sorts.  I first began writing Tales from the American Football League in October 2010.  My plan had initially been to create a blog that I could use to connect with fellow AFL fans and share scans of my signed card collections.  Simple plans, which resulted in a simple blog.  I posted very sporadically for about 18 months, sharing stories but having no general purpose. read more

A Hall of Fame Comparison – JOHN HADL

There is a feeling among AFL fans that the American Football League players are consistently overlooked for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  In truth there are many players, the bulk of whose careers were spent in the AFL, that deserve serious consideration, if not outright induction.  In an effort to spark some discussion regarding their hall of fame worthiness, I will occasionally compare AFL players to their NFL (and Hall of Fame) counterparts. Ok, this should be fun.  As many of you know already, our guest blogger, Dave Steidel, wrote one of the all-time great AFL books, Remember the AFL.  The book takes a look at each team on a year-by-year basis, is chock FULL of photos, and has nearly every bit of info that you may hope to find on “The Other League.”  One of my favorite sections in Remember the AFL is a series of lists and quizzes that Steidel put together.  They cover everything from best & worst uniforms, best & worst coaches, and all kinds of wonderfully-debatable stuff.  Dave has been kind enough to forward those lists to me, and allow them to be run on Tales from the American Football League. read more

2009 Topps AFL Flashback Set – A Study in Frustration

2009 topps jim marshallBack in the summer of 2009, I was quietly anticipating the upcoming football card sets.  I didn’t care about getting the new Peyton Manning, Brett Favre or LaDainian Tomlinson cards.  I was awaiting the plethora of great throwback sets that Topps and the other trading card companies would surely be distributing to recognize the AFL’s 50th anniversary.  Of course there would be an infinite number of cool possibilities.  Maybe a team set for each of the AFL championship teams from 1960-1969.  Or reproductions of the early Fleer sets.  Or cards representing league leaders for each of the seasons.  Or…  Or…  Or… read more
