November 12, 1960 – Patriot on Way Down

BOSTON, NOV. 12 – PATRIOT ON WAY DOWN – Boston Patriots end Joe Johnson (24), is on his way down after being tackled by Fred Julian (39) New York Titans back during the second period of their game at Boston University Field last night.  Johnson managed to pick up three yards on the play, and the Patriots went on to win 38-21.  (AP Wirephoto)

Earl Faison – Heart of San Diego

Earl Faison has always been one of my favorite AFL players.  Though somewhat overshadowed (literally and figuratively) by his enormous linemate and friend, Ernie Ladd, Faison was perhaps even more dominant than Ladd until his career was cut short by injury.  While many who played against Ladd say he did not go hard on every play, the opposite is felt about Earl Faison, who played the game with abandon. read more

When Sid Was Caesar

My AFL life began in 1998, when I started researching my master’s thesis on Sid Gillman.  I recall one of the first things that I did to gather information for the project was to go to the Chargers archives and the San Diego Hall of Champions, pull the “Sid Gillman” files, and photocopy everything that they contained.  This article (see below) by Sports Illustrated’s Paul Zimmerman was one of the first articles to really give me an idea of Gillman’s influence not only on the AFL, but also on the entire professional football world. read more
