Who was Billy Lott?

In following up yesterday’s post about Gene Grabosky, Billy Lott is the second of three players for whom I recently picked up signed cards.  Lott, who began his professional career with the New York Giants of the NFL, is featured on three AFL trading cards – 1961 Fleer, 1961 Topps and 1962 Fleer.  But who was Billy Lott?

There was a bit more info on Lott than on Gene Grabosky.  Lott was drafted out of Mississippi in the sixth round (70th overall) by the New York Giants in the 1958 NFL Draft.  The young fullback saw action in 12 games that season, but was out of football by 1959.  He signed on with the fledgling Oakland Raiders in 1960, and carried the ball 99 times for a 5.3-yard average that season.  Lott and Babe Parilli were dealt to the Boston Patriots in 1961, in exchange for Alan Miller, Hal Smith and Dick Christy.
