On December 19, 1961, Clyde “Bulldog” Turner took over the reigns of the New York Titans from the club’s inaugural head coach, Sammy Baugh. Baugh handled the Titans and more importantly, their mercurial owner, Harry Wismer, for nearly two full seasons. By the end of his tenure, the relationship between the two was greatly strained. Though the Titans had some talent on their squad, Turner was no more successful that Baugh. By 1963 the Titans had been pulled from Wismer and sold to Sonny Werblin who renamed them the Jets, and started down the path towards Super Bowl III.
