With their second-round pick in the 1962 AFL draft, the Oakland Raiders selected a running back and kicker out of the University of Washington named George Fleming.  Fleming signed a $15,000 contract (with a $3,500 bonus) with the Raiders, but played only a single season in the AFL despite being productive in the Oakland backfield and on special teams.  He sat out the 1962 season due to a salary dispute, and then moved north to play a few seasons in the Canadian Football League.

Once he left football for good, Fleming returned to the Seattle area and embarked upon a career in politics.  He was elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1968, and became the first African-American to be elected to the Washington State Senate just two years later.

In 2007, Dan Raley wrote a piece called, Where Are They Now? George Fleming, UW football legend, for the Seattle P.I.
