A couple of weeks ago, I was made aware of an Oakland Raiders site called Just Blog Baby, from which Shane Sholperoort writes about all things Raiders.
Recently, the blog published a succinct and informative piece on the origin of the Raiders, and the basis for their colors and logos. The article, called “How the Oakland Raiders got their Logo and Colors,” can be found HERE.

It happened in 1963, after the last preseason game

– pillaging & plundering (shopping) the bargain bin at Family Dollar? [rimshot /cymbal crash!]; they knew the best colors (red & gold) had already been taken so they settled for silver & black.

OK, the Raiders (my second favorite team, go figure) uniforms are very sharp, and they could’ve done a whole lot worse (i.e., beaten the Denver Broncos to the sock bin for a chance at those vertical striped socks.)

Man, that guy’s blog seemed lifted from Wikipedia. It was Bleacher Report bad.
While most of his blog is true, the colors and helmet were changed in 1963, not 1964. Al Davis “Paterened the uniforms after Army’s Black Knights of the Hudson team”,this is a quote by Al Davis from a show I watched this week. Also, I not sure about the part about the AFL team owners deciding jointly on the team name “Raiders” to be true.
Everyone talks about “black and gold’ as the original Oakland Raider colors Yes, it’s true, but the original team uniform had little gold in it. Just some gold stripeing on the sleeves and socks, gold in the seams on the trousers, and gold border on the white curved jersey numbers. Helmet was black without any stripe or logo, jersey was black, trousers were white. Road jersey was white with black curved numbers bordered with gold, likewise sleeve stripeing.
Note: “Gold” was a yellow-gold similar to “Steelers” gold, not metallic gold like the 49ers wear.
I attended the first Oakland Raider game ever played, July 31, 1960, at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
To Charles – Wow, that’s great that you were at that game. I bought the program from that game back in 1994, before prices really went up. Do you have any momento’s from that game ? What memory’s do you have from that game ? It would be great to hear about it if you have time.
