Legends Look Back: Don Maynard

Digging around on YouTube, I came across this interview with Don Maynard from the days leading up to Super Bowl XLIII.  While Joe Namath is so heavily covered, Maynard is much less publicized than his hall of fame counterpart and quarterback.  As you might expect, Maynard shares his memories of Super Bowl III, and delves a bit into “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” the famed 1958 NFL Championship between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants, for whom Maynard was a rookie.

If you are a Jets and/or Maynard fan, you might also take a look at his biography, “You Can’t Catch Sunshine.”

I had the pleasure of meeting Don at Giants Stadium years ago. In fact, I met his son on Facebook, and was able to get Don to sign 2 Jets tickets from a game a few years ago that had his picture on them. I simply mailed the tickets to his son. As a token of my appreciation, I told his son to keep 1 ticket for his personal collection. Don then sent me his signed HOF picture card. I display it proudly with my framed picture of Shea Stadium. Will never forget his catch over George Atkinson in the AFL title game at Shea in Dec ,1968 to get the Jets into Super Bowl III
