– thought for a second there that was his coaching record (or as Lou himself would say: “they’re killing me Whitey – they’re killing me!”)

Saban had some good players at Western Illinois, Larry Garron and Booker Edgerson.
Lou Saban had a very interesting coaching career,a man meant to roam. Lou made stops after coaching professionately ,to colleges, junior colleges, high schools, arena league, and even worked for the New York Yankees as president.A man truly who loved to teach and coach.
Bob Chandler writes in his book “Violent Sundays” Saban treated everyone the same and treated us all like men and Saban was an enigma, at times the sweetest, gentlest man and then turn into the meanest man imaginable. “It was a psychological ploy that worked.” He writes” If it was a particular bad game when watching the film Saban would stand in front of the projector and as the film progressed he would grow so angry that he would erupt and spew forth asking what was wrong with them? and scare them out of their minds. He would yank the film out of the reel and throw it against the wall. Saban proved his point and we didn’t need to go over the mistakes we made. We were so intimidated that we vowed to ourselves to work harder to eliminate mistakes and not screw up he next time. He found the right combination of compassion, fear, anger, and honesty that endeared his players to him and his style of football. The last thing we wanted to do was let him down.”
