Several years ago I put together a chart showing year-by-year team offensive numbers for each team (AFL & NFL) and totals for the decade. I found it to be pretty interesting. The most illuminating bit for me was how it dispelled the notion that the AFL was a pass-only league, while the NFL was all about the proverbial “three yard and a cloud of dust.” In actuality, passing numbers were quite similar through both leagues. These charts also revealed how impressive the Chargers offense was during the 1960s. All things considered, they were arguably the most productive offense in either league during the 1960s. Sid Gillman knew how to rack up the yards and the points.

These are interesting “Gross Numbers”. They are not always indicative of how good a team is. If you are behind by three TD’s you may be forced to throw more than you wish. You have great yardage numbers, but have lost the game.
And for some reason teams with great rushing attacks do not always have good records either. Balance appears key for most winning teams.
I read the Cold Hard Football Facts. They seem to indicate that key indicators are Quarterback Rating, Defense Pass Completion percentage, and Yards completed per pass attempt. There are a few others, but those statistics have a very high correlation of team success.
Now how about some defensive stats?
The stats refute what was often derision by the the “NFL” advocates re the “AFL” as a “pass happy” , “no defense” league, not as as tough as the NFL,….that’s is blown away by reviewing the passing, running and total offense and scoring stats put together in this article. Note for the 10 years of the AFL (1960-1969) totaling up the teams that played the full 10 years in each league, (8 AFL teams and 13 NFL teams)……the overall average of Rushing yards per team per game in the AFL was 116.55 yds, the NFL 122.73 yds per team per game; Passing yds/game per team AFL 212.77 vs 200.67 in the NFL….Total offense per team per game AFL 329.28 yds vs NFL 323.31 yds……………pretty damn close………wonder what games some of those “writers” were watching? By the way, based on the stats in the article, the average points per game per team over the 10 years were AFL teams 23.08 and the NFL teams 21.67……Tex Maule…what were writing about?… the facts are in…Super Bowl wins AFL 2, NFL 2.
