Bob Laraba (53) closes in on the Oilers’ Charlie Tolar (44).
Last week I posted an official game summary from the 1963 AFL championship game. Readers seemed pleased to be able to view the information, and I received a few requests for more summaries. Well, I have plenty of them, and need to figure out the best way to set up some sort of game summary gallery. In the meantime, here is the official summary from the 1961 championship game between the Chargers and Oilers, held on December 24th, in San Diego’s Balboa Stadium.
From all that I have heard and read, this was one of the hardest-hitting games in AFL history. There was absolutely no love lost between the Lou Rymkus-led Oilers and Sid Gillman’s Chargers. The grudge held by the coaches was transferred onto the field by the players. The result was a low-scoring defensive struggle played by two of the league’s greatest offenses.

These are very interesting. Excellent picture of Bob Laraba, who unfortunately lost his life in an auto accident less than two months later. #61 for Houston is original AFL player Bob Talamini. Seven years later in Super Bowl III Bob was leading Mat Snell on many sweeps to the left. Thanks again.

Great photo from a brutally punishing game by all accounts. While Lou Rymkus had been instrumental in building the Oilers’ team that was on the field that day, but owner Bud Adams had fired him earlier that season. Wally Lemm led the Oilers after the fifth game of the regular season and guided the Oilers to 10 straight wins and the ’61 AFL Championship. During that run the Oilers only had a three-man coaching staff; Lemm, and assistants Walt Schlinkman and Joe Spencer. (Spencer would later be the offensive line coach for the Jets in Super Bowl III.)
Todd, I haven’t had a chance to read through these pages yet. I just want to say YES, I am pleased to be able to view the documents. They’re a gold mine.
I also appreciate the readers’ comments and the valuable insight they bring.
Those were such fun years during the AFL’s infancy. So many discarded players found new careers that would have been lost. I was a big Oilers fan and wish I could have been there during those years of Blanda, Hennigan, Tolar, Jancik, Norton, etc. They were fun to watch.
