Marty Schottenheimer has made a name for himself as a no-nonsense, tough-minded football coach. With his patented brand of Martyball, Schottenheimer became known for taking moribund professional teams and building them up to the brink of greatness. He did it nearly everywhere he went, in Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and with the San Diego Chargers.
Prior to launching his coaching career, Marty Schottenheimer was a linebacker with the Buffalo Bills and Boston Patriots of the American Football League. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Schottenheimer over the telephone, and discuss with him that great Bills defense, and his memories of the AFL.

You corralled a great name and a great era in your interview with Marty. While we all remember his coaching career, most don’t recall Marty’s time in the AFL. His fondness and remembrances of the AFL support the thought that the league was indeed a powerful force in sports during the 1960’s.
Of course, I particularly enjoyed Marty’s quick thoughts on Frank Buncom and your reminder to him that Frank won the co-MVP award in the ’65 AFL All-Star game vs the Buffalo Bills.
Your interview with Schottenheimer is just another example of the treasure trove of information you provide on your TFTAFL site. Thank you, Todd!
Wish I could find an old picture the back of Schottenheimer’s Buffalo Bills jersey – Marty’s was the ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious of name tags, if not the longest surname in pro football history then right up there…
Have original 8 x10 press photo of Marty (as well other Bills) if your interested. I’m also interested in collecting other Press photos of players I don’t have if anybody else has any !
Thanks charley, no, I just referenced said for purposes showing others just how long Schottenheimer’s name was/looked on the jersey tag.
I have an old video of Marty that was shot from behind – looks as if the lettering his name on the jersey starts from about one armpit & runs to the other; instead of a straight left to right name on a jersey name tag, his surname was so long it looked like an upside down letter ‘u’ comparison…
