One of the interesting things about the AFL is the number of great coaches who came up as assistants with AFL teams – Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll, Al Davis, Tom Bass, Bum Phillips, Chuck Knox, John Madden and many more. The most impressive AFL staff, in my mind, is that of the early Chargers. Sid Gillman, Al Davis, Chuck Noll, Jack Faulkner and Joe Madro. Is there another staff in history in which 60% of its members were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Imagine the conversations in coaching meetings…
I could be wrong, but I think Sid Gillman, after he retired from coaching, was employed by more than one team to revamp their passing games.Al Davis was a big disciple of his teachings.Sid was the first coach, followed by many,”to stretch the field”.He years ahead of his time, followed later, by many.
Hi Eddie, It is so much fun to see that there still are people around who remember Sid Gillman’s genius. I’m partial, of course, being one of Sid’s “baby footballs”. I’m 77 years old now and still remember the thrill of his games, win or that occasional loss. The Gillman family was very lucky in that respect. We credit Todd Tobias with keeping the flame burning. Yes, Sid went on to change the Bear offense and thereby making Walter Payton the great player he became. He was coach of the year with the Oilers, had a stint with the Cowboys, and loved his time with Dick Vermeil in Philadelphia helping Ron Jaworsky become a great quarterback. Just curious….how are you????
Last sentence should have read: How OLD are you?????? I’m sure you’re fine. But how old are you????
I’m 64,and it sounds like you’re a young 77.
Hey Bobbe,I remember reading an article a number of years ago that in 1963 after the Chargers won the AFL Championship in which they visciously mauled the Boston Patriots 51-10,the overall season performance offensively and defensively was noted by the nations football media which they pointed out was even more impressive than the NFL Champion of that year the Bears. The article went on to say that the football writers of the time pointed out that this Charger team from that inferior league as the NFL called it that was all pass and flash, should square off for the tittle of Champion of football. When the Chargers were asked about it,they said they were game for it,but the Bears declined the chance. The article closed with the line that had the Bears accepted the opportunity and played the Chargers, that would have been the very first super bowl.It sure would be neat to know who would have won and how the game and league would have been different than it is.
Roninbolt, you are so right. Sid called Sir Halas and asked about a match up but Halas declined. I always credit Sid with the Super Bowl concept. But he was ahead of his time in many areas. He was the first professional coach that had his players room with each other by virtue of their position. So for the first time black and white athletes were not only roommates but became lasting friends. Way back in his college coaching days at Miami of Ohio, Sid turned down a Sun Bowl invitation because they told him to leave his one black player at home. Later on when he coached the Oilers, he took the whole team out of a hotel because they insisted the black players house at a different hotel. What I’m trying to impress here is that not only was he a brilliant coach, but a great humanitarian, husband, and grandfather. I miss him.
Todd, as Bobbe Corbin said, you’ve kept the flame burning.
Please post some more articles ! ! ! ! I still have fun reading (and rereading) them. Of course I love all the comments by the readers, like 1967 (a.k.a. AFL), Howard, Tom, billd, and others. It’s also great to have former AFL player Chris Burford comment.
How ’bout some more articles?
My apologies for misspelling Bobbe Korbin’s name.
Todd, I hope you do some more posting. Hope your wife, daughter, and sons are well.
