What a great photo! Not sure which gives me more joy, the smile on the son’s face or the kiss of the father, what a beautiful moment.
Just like AFL stars Maurice “Mo” Moorman and the late Sam Gruneisen, Bob Talamini is a product of my hometown, Louisville, KY.
BTW…Super Bowl III was Bob’s last pro game, An original Oiler (1960-67), he went to the Jets for the ’68 season. In the game, he paired with Winston Hill to form the dominant left side of the Jet offensive line that ran the “19 Straight” play with Matt Snell, Em Boozer and Bill Mathis reading the linemen’s blocks for gains.
Bob was one of the best trades the Jets made in those years. Solidified the offensive line in 1968….and any Jet fan knows the rest of the story. Had the pleasure of meeting him years ago at a Jet reunion in Secaucus, NJ
As a diehard Oilers fan marooned in Boston, I spent an agonizing, rainy Friday night in Fenway Park in November 1963, watching the Patriots destroy them 45 to 3. I was the only kid that was camped outside the Oilers locker room after the game with my father, and I was able to get almost every member of the team’s autograph. When I told Bob Talamini that I thought he was the best offensive guard in football (which at the time I thought was true) he stopped and talked to my father and I for 10 minutes, introduced us to the players as they came out, and then led us back into the locker room to make sure that George Blanda, my favorite player, gave me his autograph. Blanda was frequently in a foul mood after losses, and Talamini was worried that he would blow us off. Fortunately, Blanda had been pulled in the second half for Jackie Lee, and most of the really bad stuff that happened after that for the Oilers, happened on Lee’s watch. Blanda couldn’t have been nicer, and when he found out I was a placekicker, let me try on his shoe. When the Jets beat the Colts, everybody in the family was happiest for Bob Talamini because he was such a great guy to us that night, and really embodied the best spirit of the American Football League.

Good memories. Bob Talamini and Winston Hill were two of several advantages the Jets had in SBIII that the Colts could not match.
