dickie post was so underrated plus almost a forgotten player. but he had moves that most running backs have today. loved watching him play, one of the greatest in my book. and so was lowe and lincoln.
Not sure about any of the rest, but I do remember going to games at War Memorial in Buffalo with my Dad and not being able to see large sections of the field because of the columns that supported the roof.
I’m surprised that Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium didn’t earn a spot on the “Best Stadiums” list! I’d always heard that it was quite popular for both the home fans and visiting teams alike!
I’m also shocked that Municipal Stadium isn’t on the list,,, I was only 10 when we won SB IV, so I never got to see it in person, but watching games on tv from there, it looked beautiful! Especially with George Toma’s handiwork.
Read your “best split end/flanker list with interest. Lots of wonderful players . Checked Pro Football Reference site for some interesting facts. Otis Taylor and I, ranked 7th on the list of ten. We played in an offense that threw the least number of passes amongst the pairings (377) , had the highest completion per centage 52.8%;, (Dawson alone , 284 for 56%), We had the 2nd highest yards per attempt 8.3, (Dawson 9.1, QB rating 101.7), ’67 Jets threw 515 times, (Namath 481 for 52.5%, 6.1 yards per attempt QB rating 73.8 ), Average number of attempts by all other 9 ranked pairing per team was 485 per season. We had lots of help from Fred Arbanas, Mike Garrett and Curtis McClinton. Our O line of Tyrer, Budde, Frazier, Merz and Hill, along with TE Arbanas was the best. Having Len Dawson, a HOF QB didn’t hurt. There is some truth in “it takes a village”! Enjoyed the exercize…and your Steidel rankings. chris
Boy I miss the AFL
Chris,
Based on the passing numbers, the Cheifs averaged nearly 100 throws less than the AFL average. At a 50% completion rate, if you had played in the Jets or another system with Otis, you each may have added another 15 or so catches per season. 15 catches is not and insignificant amount, when added over a 10 year career, that’s 150 catches and with those numbers it would be indefensible to deny yourself, Otis, and Arbanas Canton.
Glad to see Al Atkinson on the list. He has never received proper recognition for deflecting the Morral to Mitchell pass that bounced of Mitchell’s shoulder pads in the end zone during SB III.
Imagine if Warren Wells would have gotten to the Raiders in 1964 at age 22, and played with Art Powell for five or so years. In 1966 Wells was a 24 year old rookie with the Lions and Art Powell was 29 turning 30 in 1967. For the 1967 season the Raiders aquired Wells and with Biletnifoff in tow the Raiders shuffled Art off to Bufallo.
If those two would have played together it would have been a PA announcers dream, it would have been simpler, it would be “Touchdown Art Powell” and touchdown “Warren Wells.”
We had season tickets for the Bills all through the 60s and I can account for the horrible conditions at our beloved “Rockpile”. The men’s bathrooms did not have enough urinals and it was common practice to see men urinating in the sinks instead. Disgusting I know , but you did what you had to do. The worst thing though was we had our seats under one of the jerry-rigged auxilary press boxes. There was a catwalk from the press box to a bathroom above us that looked like an outhouse. When the toilet was flushed it occasionally leaked down and onto those unfortunate of us sitting below. My dad started to bring an umbrella as protection. Despite these conditions that stadium was still home to our Bills and I definitely shed a tear when it was torn down.
Great story. Bills fans forever!
Some one I just thought of for the under rated list. How about Jim Nance of the Patriots. I almost never see his name mentioned, but if I remember correctly, the man was a stud.
Fenway Park Boston should be listed as one of the worst stadiums to watch a game in.I went to two games there and obstructed view should of been posted on the ticket.I don’t even know how they managed to fit a football field in there and manage some End Zone seats.
The list of split end/flanker combos is a great example of the talent in the AFL. Every one of those duos was amazing and rarely matched since.
Miller Farr and his brother Mel Farr were great players. Mel was an excellent RB for Detroit. He went on to be a very successful Ford dealer in Detroit.
You don’t get it Kezar and War memorial were the best cause they were so bad!!!
Under rated was Art Powell of the Raiders
