#081 – Chris Burford
One of the great sources for AFL articles and information is the Kansas City Chiefs web site. The Chiefs have a Hall of Honor museum, employ a team historian (Bob Moore, who has been very helpful to me and this site), and take the business of documenting their history seriously.
In this recent article, brought to my attention by reader Todd Kurlan, Bob Moore explores the talent searches that made the Chiefs so dominant in the late 1960s. Quoted liberally throughout the article is Chris Burford, an original Texans/Chiefs player, and one of the most active former players here on Tales from the American Football League.

The 1960’s was such a great time & innovation was at the forefront. Having seen what former skier & rookie K Jan Stenerud did in ’67, Hank Stram did an tour of Europe in 1968 & uncovered soccer players Horst Muhlmann & Bobby Howfield, both of whom played in the AFL as kickers, CIN & DEN.
Stram had earlier expressed interest in NBA player Wilt Chamberlain as an TE & WR on offense; Wilt later was considering boxing Cassius Clay / Muhammad Ali shortly after that, but it was in hindsight just an media event. Point being, there was no ‘going with the flow’ for AFL types, 1960’s…they blazed new trails.
That is one of the things the Chiefs were once ‘best’ at: being trendsetters. From Klosterman & Wells talent forays every nook & cranny, George Toma’s gorgeous painted field designs, Stram’s offensive & defensive innovations (moving pocket & stack defense, which some claim was merely off-shoot of earlier design others), KC was ahead of the curve then whereas they’ve largely been followers a football sense at least, since.
I can attest that Rick Smith & Bob Moore are two of the real good guys from the world of pro football PR! Not just the opinion of this former SID.
