Although I grew up as a fan of the San Diego Chargers, I will always have a great respect and appreciation for the Kansas City Chiefs. Not only did their owner, Lamar Hunt, found the AFL, but the Chiefs employ a gentleman named Bob Moore as a team historian, and he consistently produces excellent pieces dedicated to the Chiefs in the 1960s, and the AFL in general.
Bob Moore recently put together a piece on a man who is undoubtedly the least-known of the AFL commissioners, yet he presided over some of the most important times in league history. Milt Woodard was an important part of AFL history, and a man who is Too Often Forgotten.

Very good!
he (Woodard) would have been just as happy if every league team had “a 4-4 record after eight weeks”.
– and the bu$ine$$men spake… while ‘no team left behind’ is Democratic in an football sense as otherwise, the premise alone that Woodward presents never did nor does it today resonate with me.
Alas today more than before, trending such NFL, they for economic reason$ like the idea 32 teams caught up in the ecstasy of parity – ‘throes’ my opine, more so ‘mediocrity’ to this football fan.
Fortunately, the fates or natural order of things have yet to allow it least to the extent they desire & imagine. Still have an few ‘better than average’ teams, thankfully. The NFL conveniently refers to it – ‘keeping fan interest’.
I submit that without some better than average teams, season becomes Sisyphus rolling his rock to the top the hill… tedious to watch. Their hope realized, no need a Hall of Fame, for every team & player would qualify… Canton would groan under the weight.
While excitement is the purview each of us, I enjoy watching a 52-0 blowout, least occasionally, to a 20-17 nail-biter won by an team at the last second; God forbid a game ends a tie despite sudden death. If I am a dinosaur in my thinking, so be it.
Ditto MLB: I hated the switch to divisions in ’69 instead of the very best team going straight to the World Series. Perhaps economic survival demands it but it waters down the product, my opine… less one prefers watching a legion average man’s nee everyman’s/teams.
I foresee the day coming every team will qualify for post season, economics alone the impetus, soon as NFL/MLB/NBA etc. can manage work it into reality.
On that day, an NFL post season victorious chant of “we went 8-8 this year – best team in the league and won the World Championship!”.
Hip hip hooray.
Rant fini.
