Frank Tripucka, the Denver Broncos first quarterback, and man who gave Peyton Manning his blessing, and allowed him to wear his #18 for the Denver Broncos, died last week at age 85.
In a fun and interesting piece on the Denver Broncos website, analyst Andrew Mason takes a look at the interesting route that Tripucka travelled on his way to the American Football League.
Mr. Tripuka was as fine of a man as he was a player. Only last month, he signed all of my Bronco’s helmets and got a laugh from the original brown Bronco helmet i had him sign with the number 23 on it.. He always had time for those who remembered him and seemed very honored that he was still known. Unfortunately, Mr. Tripuks was suffering from memory loss and had both good and bad days as he was in poor health for the last few years. May you rest in peace Mr. Tripuka. I for one am very honored to have known you.
It’s a shame that another star from the early AFL years has passed. Mr. Tripucka had a memorable pro career and played on some of the strongest teams in the history of Notre Dame football. Rest in peace.
I contributed to the other Tripucka thread but will add a couple comments here.
He was important in Denver’s development as a franchise. Just the sight of the yellow stripe socks should tell you something about their early beginnings. When Lionel Taylor joined up with Denver he and Frank hooked up on 500 plus passes.I got to meet Mr. Tripucka as a kid in 1962. Back then Denver was lucky to fill half the stadium. He was a classy player and a classy person. RIP, Mr. Tripucka.
