Last week AFL icon, Joe Namath, celebrated his 70th birthday. As the old saying goes, where has the time gone?
In honor of Namath’s big day, Athletes Quarterly ran a great interview with the former New York Jets legend. Namath talks about his early years, going to play football at Alabama, his time with the Jets, and his life today. Enjoy.
Always great to hear from Joe. There was no one like him before he came around, and no one remotely like him since. He is likethe Sinatra of football, the clear cut top o’ the pops.
Nice interview in the Quarterly with Namath. Glad to see he is doing well! chris Burford Texans/Chiefs 60-67
You are so right Todd, where has the time gone? I still remember watching him play from the late 60s into the 70s. The game will never see his kind again. Just imagine what he’d have done if he would have had knees.
Thanks Todd. Despite all of the hoopla surrounding Joe he always seemed as though he was well anchored. From what I heard in the late 60’s and early 70’s he liked to visit his friend John Hadl at John’s Fletcher Hills home. The HBO feature about Joe is worth viewing.
Growing up in the 60’s in Buffalo, I enjoyed watching Joe play our Bills twice a year. He was always my QB of choice. I had the pleasure of watching the ’69 SuperBowl with 3 roommates from Baltimore. Knees or no knees he was the QB you wanted in a big game. Todd, you need to delve into the story of Cookie Gichrest. He belongs in the Hall of Fame. He was an early star who really legitimized the early AFL. The toughestplayer ever to put on an AFL or NFL jersey. Find some old film of Cookie and you won’t believe it.
