I was recently looking over the website a MSB Sportscards, a great company that specializes in vintage football memorabilia. After a bit of perusing, I saw that they had a listing for what, in my mind, is the nicest team issued card set of the AFL era, the set produced by the 1965 Houston Oilers. This 16-card set features beautiful color photos, adorned simply with a facsimile signature and white border, in a nearly 8″x10″ format.

The 27th Edition of the Beckett Football Card Price Guide has the following entry on the set:
This team-issued set of 16 photos measures approximately 7-3/4″ x 9-3/4″ and features color posed shots of players in uniform. eight photos were grouped together as a set and packaged in plastic bags; sets 1 and 2 each originally sold for 50 cents. The photos were printed on thin paper stock and white borders frame each picture. A facsimile autograph is inscribed across the pictures in black ink. The backs are blank. The photos are unnumbered and checklisted below in alphabetical order.

I followed the Jets from 1967..i read a lot about the AFL and NFL, and always loved watching the AFL games…My first AFL Game was the Jets and Chargers, after about 5 minutes?..I only watched NFL games if nothing else was on!
When I was a senior in Highschool, My research paper was on SB III and how that changed the game….
I was also a Jets fan and Joe Namath. My dad went to Alabama in 1942 as a freahman. I followed Namath from his Alabama days. I loved the Jets back then
I would love to read Mr Todd Tobias masters thesis on Sid Gilman. I last saw Sid when I stopped by his home at La Costa with my nephew Daniel in June of 1997. I sat with he and his beautiful wonderful wife Esther and he told interesting stories and Esther showed us all of his wonderful pics and football stuff. He was a wonderful nice man. Did Todd Tobias live also in that area?
Thanks for posting. In 1965 the Oilers still had many veterans from their early AFL Championship days. Sonny Bishop graduated from El Cajon Valley High School and went on to play at Riverside JC and Fresno State. Thanks again.
I knew Sonny Bishop played at Fresno State for the late Clark Van Galder didn’t know he played at Riverside CC, Van Galders’ son Tim played QB for several season in the NFL with the Cardinals and the youngest son Don also played QB at Utah with the Utes in the early 1970’s and was destined for greatness when his career was derailed by injury.
Former NFL players Tom and Billie Hayes played at Riverside RCC, Tom played both football and basketball on RCCs’ 1965 undefeated State championship team for legendary hoops coach Jerry Tarkanian before transfering to SDSU.
Coincidentally Tark would see his coaching career end in Fresno, his alma mater, with the Bulldogs.
Former KC Chiefs occasional starting Qb Tony Adams also played at RCC after playing freshman ball in 1968 at the U of Texas. During RCC first scrimmage Adams was run out of bounds and separated his left shoulder and was gone for the season, but later returned and played basketball for RCC before transfering to Utah State 1970-72. In 1973 Tony was drafted by the Chargers in the same draft as Dan Fouts, the same year the Bolts signed Johnny Unitas.

I loved the early pre merger AFL games and particularly loved the early Oilers with Blanda, Toler, Hennigan, et.all. The Oiler’s early uniforms were a model in class and simplicity. I wish the Tennessee Titans would take a few lessons from those unis. The AFL games were so much more exciting than the Washington Redskins games (the only available NFL games in the south at the time). The one thing I don’t miss is the early Denver Bronco brown and mustard unis with the vertical striped socks!!
