The first Thanksgiving Day AFL game was played between the New York Titans and Dallas Texans in 1960. At least one AFL game was played each Thanksgiving Day in the 1960s. Below you will find a list of those games and the final score.
The many readers, subscribers and commentors are one of the things that I am thankful for this year. I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving, and enjoy watching the Jets and Patriots in the evening game, a battle of original AFL franchises!

I’ll always remember the 64 game with Pete Gogolak doing a backflip after kicking the go-ahead field goal.
I, too, remember Gogolak kicking the winning field goal in the last few seconds of the game. What a crusher! The “soccer” style of kicking was so new in football at that time, so it was a bit weird to see him kick that way. Still, it was an epic game and I still have the program from that great game!
Even though the AFL played T-day games before the Dallas Cowboys were in existence, “under the terms of the merger” THe AFL/AFC’s T-day games were dropped, and the “tradition” was given to the Cowboys.
Very interesting points. In the “Modern History” of the NFL there is no mention of the AFL tradition of holding these games on Thanksgiving.
I believe Dallas started hosting the game around 1965 or so. I do remember the first post merger game in Detroit. Lions/Raiders was a great contest.
19 Bambi puts a move on 64 Harry Jacobs, Harry played football at a basketball school Bradley and knows a thing or two about Canton, The one in OH possibly as a visitor and Canton Ill, where he was born.
1964 was a dream come true for the Whittier HS Cardinals, the Cards were led that year by George Buehler and to everyones surprise won the CIF SS 4 A Title. The Cinderella cards had to first get past LB Poly and Gene A Washington to reach the finals against heavy favored Loyola Cubs in the LA Memorial Coliseum. The Cubs were trying to 3 peat and got beat 21-14. George Kunz Notre Dame, Atlanta Falcons tackle was on that Loyola Team. Beuhler and Washington would team together in college at Stanford and play throughout the 1970’s on the opposite sides of the SF Bay.
Thanks for the above comments— brings back a lot of great childhood memories
